Abstract: China has a long history of using vascular plants and a large body of recorded knowledge on uses. However, due to the difference of plant nomenclature system used in literatures, abundant plant utilization knowledge is scattered in all kinds of local records and literature. Shortages of information integration and scientific name proofreading will not conducive to the research and development of important plant resources. Here, we construct a database of plants used in China based on an extensive survey of the literature. Total of 155 books, articles and dissertations of ethnobotany, published since 1980s were reviewed and integrated. As a result, a total of 51,000 records of "plant use-citations", divided into 12 usage categories, such as medicinal, edible, Ornamental, etc., have been extracted and recorded. In order to proofread wrong or nonstandard plant names used in "plant use-citations", Latin names used in "plant use-citations" were checked with reference to the Flora of China (English version). After processing, each data record contains Chinese name, Latin name, usage description, usage category, reference of usage record, Latin name after proofreading and proofread name reference. As the database was published, a website named Chinese useful plant database has been constructed, to carry out online service and data updating continuously. This database has basically integrated the vascular plant resources used in China for the first time, will provides background data for the research, utilization, and protection of plant, which is of great significance to the sustainable utilization of biodiversity resources and the inheritance of traditional knowledge in China.
