Abstract: At the end of Caledonian structure, most of South China was exposed and suffered from weathering and denudation in different degrees. The Devonian transgression submerged most of the Yangtze block, and a set of terrigenous siliciclastic rocks with similar lithology were widely deposited, which were in unconformity contact with the underlying strata. The provenance information and sedimentary environment information of this set of siliciclastic rocks are keys to reveal the paleogeomorphology of the lower Yangtze region at the end of Caledonian tectonic movement and the paleogeographic pattern of sedimentary lattices in the early Late Paleozoic. The basic petrological data of the Wutong group in the lower Yangtze region is scarce, and repeated basic petrological work is still in progress. In order to better share these basic petrological data, this dataset collected and analyzed the microscopic characteristics of 200 siliciclastic rocks samples from 12 sections and 12 outcrops of the upper Devonian Lower Carboniferous Wutong group in the southern part of the lower Yangtze River by using polarizing microscope. Collected 12 thin section images of clastic rock samples of Wutong group from previous literatures, and a total of 212 micro images of siliciclastic rocks were sorted into a detailed dataset. This dataset contains the sampling location, stratigraphic age, rock name and characteristics of the samples. It can not only be applied to the basic geology research of Wutong group, but also be applied to the interdisciplinary research such as image intelligent recognition, and provide basic data services for social production.
