Abstract: The province of Xinjiang is located in the Eurasian hinterland in northwestern China, with the complex terrain, and fragile ecological environment. Xinjiang is particularly sensitive to global warming. With the global warming, drought over Xinjiang has caused extensive attention. Based on the daily temperature and precipitation observed at 55 meteorological stations over the Xinjiang during 1961 – 2015, this study calculated a series of drought indices based on the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The SPEI was calculated for each station with time scales of 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 months selected for analysis. This dataset is useful for research on the change trend and spatial-temporal characteristics of drought events over the Xinjiang. When used together with regional statistical data, this dataset can also reveal the impacts of drought on agricultural production and eco-hydrological environment.
