Abstract & Keywords
Abstract: The Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) radar is a large phased array radar, which enables the detection of three-dimensional wind fields in the mesosphere, stratosphere and troposphere. The MST radar operates in the very high frequency (VHF) band. The radar mainly applies the echo mechanism of turbulent scattering, Fresnel reflection and heat scattering to obtain the atmospheric three-dimensional wind profiles and turbulence characteristic parameters at different heights. Wuhan MST radar is invested and built by the Chinese Meridian Project and Wuhan University. It is the first MST radar built in the Chinese mainland, which locates at Chongyang county, Hubei province (29.51\(°\)N, 114.13\(°\)E). By using the Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS) technique with three or five non-coplanar scattering beams, the radar can obtain the power spectrum data in different directions through autocorrelation processing of the sending and receiving signals. The three-dimensional wind fields can be calculated from the radial Doppler velocities in different beam directions. Wuhan MST radar continuously detected the atmospheric wind fields from 2012 to 2020, and radar echo power spectrum, radial and product data were uploaded to Meridian Project Data Center. Through this dataset, the spatial and temporal variations of middle and upper atmospheric wind fields in the low- and mid-latitude regions of China can be derived. The dataset is useful for promoting the research of the middle and upper atmospheric dynamics in the low- and mid-latitude regions of China, and figuring out the coupling mechanisms between the low-middle-upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The dataset will also provide significant support for the establishment of wind field models in middle and upper atmosphere, as well as space weather monitoring and forecast.
