Abstract & Keywords
Abstract: Water pH and total dissolved solid (TDS) contents are important monitoring indicators of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). The long-term measurements of pH and TDS are important data for studying long-term changes of water quality within ecosystems. The pH of precipitation reflects the information about acid deposition. Besides, the pH of surface water and groundwater can be used to determine whether the water is harmful to plant growth and animal drinking. Furthermore, TDS is an indicator for reflecting total soluble solid content in water, which could also affect water absorption by plant roots and survival distributions of animals. This dataset consists of pH and TDS of precipitation, surface water, and groundwater collected from 34 field stations in five types of ecosystems of CERN, i.e. agricultural, forest, desert, grassland and marsh ecosystems during 2004-2016. The dataset can be used for analyzing temporal variations and spatial patterns of acidity and salinity of precipitation, surface water and groundwater. Meanwhile, it also can be applied for studying the long-term changes of water pH and salinization in the typical Chinese ecosystems.

Dataset compositionThis dataset consists of pH and TDS of precipitation, surface water, and groundwater collected from 34 field stations of CERN during 2004–2016. Precipitation samples were collected monthly or seasonally, except for no precipitation or insufficient precipitation months. Surface water and groundwater samples were collected monthly or seasonally. The dataset consists of two parts, with one being pH and TDS of precipitation, surface water and groundwater, and the other being the basic information of field stations. All data are stored in one MS-Excel file. The water data collected from 34 field stations are placed within three different sheets based on different types of water, including precipitation, surface water and groundwater. The basic information of all field stations is kept in one sheet.
